Author : Thomas,ShirleyTitle: The The Angler’s Museum Or The Whole Art of Float and Fly Fishing Publisher: Printed For John Fielding Paternoster Row London Circa 1785-1790 …… (see pictures) Condition of Book: Work Printed for John Fielding Paternoster Row London Third Edition [1784] date given of 1784 on the John Kirby portrait frontispiece but this is likely the First Edition so suggest this Third Edition may well be slightly later 1788 -1790 ? rebound in brown cloth with gilt title lettering to spine.Measures 15cm by 10cm.There are three former bookplates of John Gerard Heckscher present to the front pastedown and it’s verso and also smaller plate to the blank endpaper.One further bookplate of different owner ‘Colonel Henry A Siegel noted to blank leaf.John Gerard Heckscher of New York was educated with Private Tutors and went onto become a prominent Wall Street Broker and when retired from Business became Captain of the 7th Regiment in the Civil War.Married Three times he built up an impressive Private Library of Angling and Sporting books.This Third Edition has 8 Chapters to which is prefixed The Sermon of St Anthony to a miraculous congregation of fishes.The work has engraved title page.Size is 12 mo with  [6]+  Preface and 135pp plus single advertiement at rear with engraved  frontispiece portrait of John Kirby ‘the celebrated Angler’ and a former head of Newgate Prison.Page 6 is mis-numbered 8.The Contents (as listed in the title) are as follows Chap 1 The Nature and Properties of Fish in general.Chap II Rules and Cautions observed by young Anglers.Chap III. The Choice and Preparation of Rods and Lines.Chap IV. Of Float-Fishing and of live and dead Baits.Chap V Of Fly-Fishing, and the Preparation of artificial Flies.Chap VI. An Account of the different Sorts of Fish, their Haunts spawning Times, and Seasons to angle for them.Chap VII. An Account of some of the principal Sea Fish, their Nature, Qualities, and Manner of catching them and Lastly Chap VIII.
