Description

Author : Walter Wilson     Title: The History and Antiquities Of Dissenting Churches (Four Volumes in Original Cloth) and Meeting Houses In London,Westminster and Southwark Including The Lives Of Their Ministers,From The Rise Of Nonconformity To The Present Time    Publication: First Editions Printed For The Author and Sold By W Button and Son,T Williams and Son,J Condor and A Maxwell London 1808-1814 ……………… (See Pictures) Condition Of Books: Four Volumes Original Boards 1808-1814 First Editions Graded Good SCARCE.All volumes are in their original 3/4 grey slate paper covered boards over cream/light brown spines with ink title lettering now largely faded or ebbing away over time.Deckle edges to pages, and untrimmed by binder. Both volumes one and three have some loss to parchment type covering of spine, approx 1-2 inches in size, with tear to head of spine on vol 4.hardly surprising given their age and the fact that they have never been rebound into leather or cloth.Inner hinge is weakened on volume one,but is still holding.Their are no previous inscriptions or bookplates present to any volume.Contents also include an appendix on the origin, progress and present state of Christianity in Britain. This is a seminal work on the subject, and a work often referred to by other scholars and enlightened thinkers. This is a highly desirable set and in spite of it’s imperfections,it remains pretty clean throughout with no noted annotations or markings internally.I have not been able to ascertain any previous records of this set coming to Auction or onto the open market. It is a rich and comprehensive study filled with a huge amount of information on dissenting ministers and the Churches in an around London at that time.A genuinely scarce work and a great addition to any early collection on Religious thought and History or on London itself. The set is complete with 26 engraved plates (as called for) with binder’s directions at the end of Volume 4 listing 26 plates. These plates have been bound at the beginning of Volume One together and are taken from various portrait paintings by Hopgood.Minister portraits include those of Samuel Wilton,Benjamin Avery,Joseph Hussey,Timothy Cruso,Caleb Fleming,Samuel Say and others. The Four volumes were begun in 1808 and completed in 1814 First Editions.Postage rates will be quoted on request.
