Description

Author : Howard Robinson (Several Letters Laid in From Previous Postmaster Generals Including Tony Benn and John Stonehouse)

Title: The British Post Office A History

Publication: First US Edition 1st Impression Published By Princeton University Press New Jersey USA 1948…………………………………….. (See Pictures)

Condition Of Book and Dust-Jacket : This is a Very Good Copy of this book in brown cloth with gilt title lettering to spine blocked in grey,in a Good only dust-jacket that has numerous small chips and tears to the outer edges of the dust-jacket with some loss to bottom edge of the upper cover and to the spine tips also.Comprehensive work of the Post Office from the time of Henry VIII to the present day.Not price clipped.Fascinatingly this book was loaned out to various Royal Mail Postmaster Generals of the 1950’s,60’s and early 70’s (Including Tony Benn) and the Last ever postmaster General who was John Stonehouse. The book was returned to it’s owner with the original thank you letters laid in or stuck down onto the numerous blank endpapers of the book.So having travelled around the Country on many occasions it has survived very well. There are a total of 10 letters from various ex Postmaster Generals. The book has mostly a firm binding with no hinge weakness apart from join at half title page.No leaning to spine.Well illustrated work with 36 black and white plates and 12 maps including Postal Maps of Ireland,London,Scotland and elizabethan post roads and also mail coach routes in England and Wales in 1835.A fascinating work that of course is a rather unique piece of history with so many contributions from various Postmaster Generals down the years. It’s hard to imagine that a work of the this size would be readily returned after the recipient had read the book.I dare not even lend my brother a book to borrow for fear of it never returning.Thick 8vo First US Edition 1st Impression [1948] This copy was acquired from the Private Library of Paul Adorian a keen Motor Racing Enthusiast, and well respected businessman and entrepreneur who held senior roles with many large companies and was a serious collector of Old and working Fire Engines.

” Postmaster General History: 50 Years ago on 1st Oct 1969 The Post Office changed from a Government department to a publicly owned corporation. The first Postmaster General was John Thurloe who had an important job and had previously been in Cromwell’s inner circle.Over the next 300 years more than 100 people have held this high office including Cleament Attlee,Chamberlain and also Tony Benn in 1965.The last one was John Stonehouse in 1969.Many of you will recall that he largely remembered for his unsuccessful attempt at faking his own death in 1974.Years later it was revealed that he had indeed be an agent for the Czech Socialist Republican Military Intelligence ”
