This is a Very Good + Copy of this Book in brown leather (calf( binding with gilt title lettering to spine with five raised bands to spine and with other gilt decorations in each compartment to spine.With all page edges in gilt and with further attractive inner gilt dentelles with small bookseller’s ticket of H&C Treacher Brightonm to the top edge of the front pastedown.Beautifully bound in Fernware or Mauchline Polished and varnished.This type of binding eminated from Scotland as Mauchline was a small Scottish town that produced this decorative technique that originated in the 1830s in which a transfer print of a wood engraving, often a colour design (tartan or floral motif), was applied to a lacquered wooden object. The fern, unlike other plants, particularly lent itself to being used for stencil decoration such as this one is a fine pretty much unblemished example.The fronds are instantly clearly shown and Fern Ware was used to decorate trays, tea caddies, boxes and treen.This copy has several wonderful sepia engravings of Melrose Abbey,Norman castle,Loch Katrine,Pass of the Trossachs,Loch Achray etc.A Handsome copy in this beautiful binding Reprint ,8vo (xix) 612pp [1872]
